STF DETSI Mackay Marine Strandings Training

Strengthening Marine Turtle Conservation in Mackay: Stranding Response Workshop Success

On Friday June 7th, the Sea Turtle Foundation (STF), in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI), hosted a Marine Turtle Stranding Training Workshop at the Magpies Sporting Club in Mackay. The day brought together a passionate and diverse group of volunteers and organisations, including Mackay and District Turtle Watch, JURU Enterprises, Eco Barge Clean Seas, Fauna Rescue Whitsundays, and the Whitsunday Turtle Rescue Centre.

The workshop welcomed participants from a broad range of backgrounds and experience levels; from seasoned responders seeking a refresher on updated protocols, to brand new volunteers eager to get involved in marine turtle conservation. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by all attendees made for a productive and inspiring day of learning.

Key components of the workshop included overviews of turtle population dynamics, the DETSI stranding hotline and communication protocols, body condition assessment techniques, and carcass disposal methods. A comprehensive discussion on the rehabilitation process was also included, providing participants with a clear picture of the broader efforts involved in marine turtle conservation.

A standout aspect of the training was the hands-on, practical learning component. Participants practiced data collection methods, turtle identification, and how to manage localised stranding scenarios. These practical exercises ensured everyone walked away with real-world, field-ready knowledge.

We’d like to extend a special thank you to Mackay and District Turtle Watch for their generous support, loaning model turtles and harnesses that were invaluable for practical demonstrations, and donating a Green Sea Turtle shell for ongoing educational use. These resources greatly enhanced the quality and impact of the training.

The event not only deepened the knowledge and confidence of individual volunteers, but also reinforced the strength of collaboration between community groups, conservation organisations, and First Nations enterprises working together to protect our iconic marine species.

The Mackay workshop was a great success, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who participated and contributed to the day. It’s through the passion and dedication of volunteers like you that we can continue to respond effectively to marine turtle strandings and support the conservation of these incredible animals.

Thank you again to all attendees. We look forward to seeing you at future workshops!
