A Joyful Journey Home: Celebrating Joni’s Release
On July 19th, the Sea Turtle Foundation was honoured to attend the release of Joni, a juvenile green turtle who captured many hearts during her rehabilitation. The event, held at beautiful Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island, drew a large crowd of local supporters who gathered to witness Joni’s return to the sea.
All of Joni’s care and rehabilitation was expertly carried out by the incredible team at MINT (Magnetic Island Network for Turtles), and we extend our deepest gratitude and congratulations to them for their dedication in sea turtle conservation and care.

Joni’s journey began back in April 2025, when he was found stranded on the tidal flats at Geoffrey Bay, presenting as underweight and battling ulcerative disease. MINT volunteers quickly jumped into action, providing a care plan focused on wound treatment, weight gain, and multiple deworming sessions. Over the next 10 weeks, Joni steadily improved, gaining weight and strength in preparation for his eventual release.
When the big day came, MINT’s devoted team carried Joni down to the shoreline, flanked by a cheering crowd and a walkway of excited community members. Without looking back, Joni hurriedly made his way back into the ocean, swimming strong, free, and healthy once again.
Following Joni’s successful return to the sea, the celebrations continued at the Jungle Club, where the MINT team hosted a post-release catch-up to mark the occasion. Surrounded by the vibrant energy of local businesses at the monthly market, supporters gathered to enjoy coffee from Tiny Palm Coffee, share stories, and reflect on Joni’s journey. The event was also the perfect moment for MINT to draw their generous raffle, helping raise further funds for future turtle care.
Events like this highlight the power of community, compassion, and collaboration. A huge thank you to MINT for their outstanding work and for inviting STF to be part of this special moment!
Swim safe, Joni!
