Sea Turtle Foundation Inspires Young Conservationists via School Education Program
Over the last 12 months the Sea Turtle Foundation has expanded its School Education Program. The Program’s expansion has been generously supported by the Big Blue Ocean Foundation.
The Sea Turtle School Education Program seeks to educate primary school children in Queensland on the topics of:
● sea turtles – types, their life cycle, geographical spread (particularly close by their local area)
● human actions that are causing negative effects on sea turtles (e.g. climate change, plastic pollution, damage to their feeding grounds)
● simple actions they can take to improve the lives of sea turtles
The Program continues to receive positive feedback from both teachers and students, highlighting its engaging, curriculum-aligned content and interactive learning opportunities.

Teachers consistently comment that the presentations are highly informative, with content that is relevant across multiple year levels and aligns well with curriculum outcomes alongside additional learning topics in a fun, interactive capacity. The Program’s flexibility allows concepts to be tailored to suit different age groups, making it valuable for both younger and older students.
Students particularly enjoy the hands-on visual components of the Program. The sea turtle species models help them compare the differences between turtle species and relate these to the real green turtle carapace that is brought along for the sessions. These tangible resources encourage curiosity and deeper discussion around turtle anatomy and identification.
The model sea turtle nest is another standout feature, helping students visualise the sea turtle life cycle and understand how delicate nesting sites and egg chambers are. This interactive element reinforces the importance of protecting nesting beaches and highlights the vulnerability of sea turtles during their earliest life stages.
At the end of the presentation, the students brainstorm real-life solutions to human made threats facing sea turtles. The ideas shared by the students around reducing plastic waste and better protecting turtle nesting beaches reflect their creativity and deepening commitment to protecting marine life. Each group proudly presents their solutions to the class, sparking further discussions and inspiring one another to take action.
The teachers say that students leave the workshops not only informed, but empowered – ready to spread their new knowledge with friends and family. Every participant becomes a proud Sea Turtle Champion, carrying forward the mission of ocean conservation.
