Collaborative Clean-Up Effort removes nearly 30kg of debris from Pallarenda Beach
As part of the Great Barrier Reef Clean-Up with Tangaroa Blue, Sea Turtle Foundation was proud to collaborate with MINT (Magnetic Island Network for Turtles) and St Joseph’s Primary School, Mundingburra, for a community clean-up at Pallarenda Beach. With fishing-related injuries in sea turtles continuing to rise across the region, this event placed a strong focus on removing discarded fishing gear and other debris that pose ongoing risks to marine life.
The response from the community was incredible with 70+ volunteers turning up to lend a hand. Their combined efforts resulted in 29.4kg of rubbish collected – a significant contribution to improving the health of this important coastal habitat.
Among the items gathered were discarded fishing line, soft and hard plastics, cans and bottles, construction materials, wood planks and boards, shoes, and cigarettes. Each piece of debris removed helps reduce potential harm to the region’s vulnerable sea turtles, as well as the wildlife that depend on local beaches and waters.
The energy and commitment shown on the day made it a standout collaboration and we extend our thanks to everyone who joined in.
